Writing Findable Content

When striving for maximum readership, one of the most critical choices you can make is how you decide to tittle your posts. Search engines weight the subject lines that appear at the top of each entry heavily, and RSS newsreaders typically display titles only unless a reader double-clicks to read further.

For those reasons, smart bloggers take the time to select words and phrases that will match searches that they expect their target audience to make. They also attempt to write subject lines that will compel subscribers to read further.

The easy way to meet both goals is to avoid cryptic, vague, and/or cute subject lines. Subject lines like “check this out”, “what do you think” and “wazzzup” don’t align with searchers needs and are likely not compelling enough for many to want to read more. Phrases that combine the bext of both worlds might be ones like “My ipod is haunted,” ” How can I find cheap airline fares,” or “Getting a job interview at Google.”

The first paragraphs of your entries are weighted more heavily by search engines than paragraphs that come later, so you’ll want to try to introduce relevant terms early in you posts.

Soon we will be writing on ” Launching you Business Blog and Getting noticed,” which will talk more about how to identify search keywords that might be relevant to your audience.

The Effectiveness Of Posting Frequently

Bloggers with passion and purpose are constantly adding new content to their sites. Experienced blog authors know that the more often you post, the more attention your blog will receive. One of the reasons for this is that Google notices how often sites are updated, and factors this in when deciding how relevant a site is. All other things being equal, a blog that gets posted to several times a day will rank much higher than a blog that receives new content once a week. Google also focuses  its attention on the subject lines in blog posts, so the more unique subject lines you introduce into the blogospere, the more searches you’ll be listed in.

To prevent a drop-off visits, many bloggers hire or ask other bloggers to ‘baby-sit’ their blog while they work on other project (like a book) or go on a vacation. While there are no hard and fast rules for what is the optimal posting frequency, an analysis of the posting frequency of the top 100 blogs as tracked by Technorati shows that the average number of posts per day is between five and six. A number of bloggers who have adjusted their posting frequency and analyzed the resulting traffic numbers claim three posts a week is a minimum, and threee times a day is where you begin to see some serious traffic.

With passion and purpose, your blog can be a labor of love that meets pragmatic business goals. Understanding what’s required and using the many tools at your disposal, there’s no reason that you can’t achieve the success of an “A list” blogger. As with so many ventures in life, enthusiasm and commitment can make all the difference.

The primary ways bloggers can earn income from their sites are via advertising and sponsorships, and there are more than a few who are making a good living from these sources.

The good news is that adding revenue-generating features like ads to your blog is very easy. The not-so-good is that your site will need to be extremely popular for the revenue to be trivial. Even though riches are hard to come by, many bloggers are happy just to make enough to cover their hosting costs.

Sponsorship are another method that can be provide bloggers with compensation for their efforts. Creating a blog that aligns with target audience can be attractive to a corporate sponsor. Many companies are eager to have ongoing branding presence on a well-executed blog.
